XChat App Launch Set for April 17 as Elon Musk Expands X Messaging Platform

X is preparing to launch its new standalone messaging app XChat, with the App Store listing showing a release date of April 17, marking a major step in Elon Musk’s plan to expand the platform beyond social media.

The app is already available for pre order on iPhone and iPad, and will automatically download when it goes live. Unlike the current direct messaging system inside X, XChat will work as a separate app, allowing users to message and call anyone on the platform without opening the main feed.

The new app brings a wide set of features.

XChat is expected to include end to end encryption, disappearing messages, screenshot blocking, and the ability to edit or delete messages for everyone in a chat. It will also support large group chats with up to 481 members, along with cross device calling.

Elon Musk first announced plans for a redesigned messaging system in 2025, promising a “new architecture” and stronger privacy features. The shift to a standalone app shows X is moving closer to its broader “everything app” vision, where messaging becomes a core part of the platform.

If successful, XChat could position X as a direct competitor to apps like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal, especially as companies race to offer more private and feature rich communication tools.
