Google Photos Search Toggle Update
Google is introducing a new toggle in Google Photos that lets users quickly switch between the AI powered Ask Photos feature and the traditional search experience. The change follows ongoing feedback from users who wanted more control over how they search their photo libraries.
The toggle appears directly inside the search interface. It allows users to switch between the intelligent Ask Photos results and the faster classic search without opening the settings menu. Google says the goal is to make both options easier to access while still leading with the results that best match a user’s query.
Ask Photos first launched in 2024 as part of Google’s push to integrate Gemini AI into its apps. The feature allows people to search their photos using natural language questions. Users can ask complex queries such as finding pictures from a specific trip, event or time period.
However the rollout was not universally welcomed. Some users reported slower search speeds and less accurate results compared to the classic system. Others preferred the simplicity of the original keyword based search. Google later paused parts of the rollout to improve performance after complaints about latency and reliability.
The new toggle is designed to address those concerns. According to Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben Yair, the update gives users direct control over the search experience. People can quickly change views depending on whether they want fast traditional results or AI powered answers.
Google also says it has improved the quality of popular search queries in Photos. The company claims Ask Photos has received more positive feedback in recent months after improvements to accuracy and performance.
The update is beginning to roll out gradually to Google Photos users. Not all users will see the new toggle immediately, as Google typically releases interface changes in stages.
The move highlights a broader shift in how major tech companies are introducing AI features. Instead of replacing traditional tools entirely, companies are increasingly offering users the option to choose between AI powered experiences and familiar workflows.
