Microsoft confirmed that the ROG Xbox Ally X handheld gaming PC will receive a major performance upgrade next month. The company announced at the Game Developers Conference 2026 that Automatic Super Resolution, known as Auto SR, will begin rolling out in April.
The update uses AI powered image upscaling to improve gaming performance. Microsoft says players could see up to 30 percent higher frame rates while maintaining similar visual quality.
Auto SR works by rendering games at a lower resolution and then intelligently scaling the image to a higher resolution. This reduces the workload on the graphics processor. The system’s Neural Processing Unit built into the AMD Ryzen Z2 AI Extreme chip handles the AI processing.
Microsoft demonstrated the feature using Forza Horizon 5 on the handheld. The game ran at about 35 frames per second without Auto SR, but increased to roughly 51 frames per second when the feature was enabled.
Unlike competing technologies such as Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR, Auto SR operates at the operating system level. This means developers do not need to integrate the feature directly into their games. The approach could make performance improvements available across a wider library of titles.
However the feature currently supports only games built on DirectX 11 and DirectX 12. Some early implementations may also introduce slight latency depending on the title and performance conditions.
Auto SR first appeared on Copilot Plus PCs powered by Snapdragon processors. Microsoft is now expanding the technology to handheld gaming hardware that includes dedicated AI processing capabilities.
For the ROG Xbox Ally X, the update could help solve one of the biggest challenges facing handheld gaming PCs. High end games often struggle to maintain stable frame rates on battery powered hardware.
If the rollout performs as expected, the feature could make the Ally X significantly more competitive with other portable gaming devices. It may also signal a broader shift toward AI driven performance optimization across future gaming platforms.
Microsoft has not confirmed whether the standard ROG Xbox Ally will receive the same feature.
