Google Maps Adds 3D Driving Navigation and Ask Maps AI

Google Maps 3D Driving Directions

Google is rolling out a major Maps update that adds a new 3D driving view and a Gemini powered search feature called Ask Maps. The company says the new navigation system is its biggest driving directions upgrade in about a decade. Ask Maps is also expanding how people search for places inside the app.

The new driving mode is called Immersive Navigation. Instead of the usual flat map, it shows roads and surroundings in 3D. Google says the system uses Street View imagery and aerial data to better highlight landmarks, road elements, and turns, while making voice guidance sound more natural. The company says this should make it easier to understand exits, overpasses, and nearby buildings while driving.

Google is also adding more detail before and during a trip. Maps can now explain tradeoffs for alternate routes, such as whether one option may take longer but avoid heavier traffic. Before arrival, the app can also show a Street View preview of the destination area and offer parking guidance. Immersive Navigation is launching in the United States next week on Android and iOS, and Google says it will also come to Android Auto, CarPlay, and cars with Google built in.

The second big addition is Ask Maps. This feature lets users type complex natural language questions and get personalized answers based on Maps data, reviews, saved places, and search history. Google says users can ask things like where to get coffee, charge a phone, or find a place that matches several needs at once. Ask Maps is rolling out now on Android and iOS in the United States and India, with desktop support coming later.

The update shows how Google is pushing Gemini deeper into everyday apps. Maps is moving beyond simple turn by turn directions and becoming more conversational, more visual, and more context aware. That could make the app more useful for both routine commutes and more complex trips.
